Spring 2008 Updates

November 23 - Goodbye Spring, Hello Winter

It's snowing again, both in Australia and in Europe. While the Australian snow will probably be gone tomorrow, the international ski racing season is beginning in the northern hemisphere. The opening World Cup of the season was on this weekend in Sweden, with young Swedish skiers Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner cleaning up the individual races on home snow - Hellner by just 1.4 seconds ahead of Piller Cottrer from Italy. Australian skiers will make their season World Cup debut next weekend in Finland, with Paul Murray and Esther Bottomley contesting the classic sprint in Kuusamo.

Over the coming weeks more Australian Team members will arrive in Europe, training and competing at all levels of competition from local club competition through to World Cup and the World Championships. We are going to trial a new way of keeping track on upcoming competitions this season. FIS races with Australians competing will be posted on a special Google Calender that can be found at this address.

The main competitions of the season for the Australian Team include the 2009 World Championship in Liberec in February, the 2009 World Junior and U23 Championships in Praz de Lys starting in January, and selected World Cup competitions from now until March.

In addition to reports on 2008/2009 Team Report section of this site, the team plans also to send regular email reports to interested readers. If you wish to be added to this mailing list please send an email to this address - finn.marsland @ gmail.com - with the words "email report" in the subject.

Best of luck to all skiers heading overseas over the summer. Early snow conditions seem good, hopefully it will be a winter with plenty of snow and no competitions cancelled or moved. Reports and articles from skiers are welcome and should be sent to finn.marsland @ gmail.com

September 25 - National Rankings

The 2008 Australian National Rankings are calculated from the percentage behind the winner in each of the national selection races. These included two freestyle and two classic races for the distance ranking, and one race of each technique for the sprint ranking.

Provisional National Teams for 2008-2009 have also been posted, based on the rankings and FIS points from last year. The official National Teams will be finalised after invitations have been sent out to all the athletes.
