The Mount Beauty Trail Run starts and finishes in the same way as the 10km event (near the swimming pool) but turns off on Rock Pool Road just out of town. From here it passes the Mermaid Pool and climbs a single link track to join the Survey Track – this is the historic track used to survey the Falls Creek Road many years ago. Heading onwards and upwards on the Survey track you will cross Chinaman’s Spur track and take the next turn left at Cranky Charley Fire Trail. Now it’s suddenly down hill on a 4WD trail as you descend to cross the river where you can choose between wet feet or rock hopping. After about 100m a short steep climb up the road embankment on your left takes you to a single track up the ridge marked with ribbons. After several hundred metres this track comes out onto the East Kiewa Fire Trail. Turning left here will take you along a scenic and not so steep management road to the valley below. Here you cross the East Kiewa river again (shallow and smooth crossing, but this time you will get wet feet) before joining the half-marathon course for the run back into town. Even though this run is about 14km the terrain will mean you should plan to be out there for a similar time you would take you to run 18-20km on the road and you will need to carry food and drink.
