The Course

A 'High Altitude' course in the Summit area of Falls Creek was used in this very poor snow year. The course was groomed in the summit, Frying Pan Spur, Mt McKay and Pretty Valley areas. The Kangaroo Hoppet comprised three loops of 14km and the Birkebeiner one loop. The non-elite skiers had to take their skis off for a 40 metre steep downhill section for safety reasons. The Joeys skied a 5.5km loop of the Mt McKay ring road. Considering the limited snow cover, it was a credit to the Alpine Resorts Commission and the Falls Creek Lift Company groomers that this event was staged at all.

Weather & Snow Conditions

The weather was perfect but the snow was very thin in places.

For the first time, an electronic timing system was used, with skiers wearing a transponder in a velcro ankleband. Night sprints were held under lights in a two-person team format outside the Cloud 9 restaurant. It was a great spectacle.
