Selection Criteria
for
Major International Competions

This is a summary of the selection criteria for Major International Competitions as set by Skiing Australia Cross Country (SAXC), the cross country committee of Ski & Snowboard Australia. Most policy documents are linked below - further questions should be directed to SAXC.

Winter Olympics

The final composition of the Australian Winter Olympic team is the prerogative of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).

In order to be selected by the AOC for the Winter Olympics each skier must satisfy the Australian Winter Olympic Team Selection Criteria as determined by the AOC in conjunction with Ski & Snowboard Australia.

For the 2010 Winter Olympics the Australian Winter Olympic Team Selection Criteria will be based on the FIS. Qualification System, which uses FIS point averages and a quota system to determine the number of athletes from each nation. Details are available in the following two documents on the SSA Website:

World Cup

FIS Point qualification standards for World Cup are set annually by the FIS Cross Country Committee. For 2008/2009 the World Cup Qualification Standards are:

  • Australia currently has a quota of 2 men and 2 women per World Cup event
  • The procedure (including relevant dates and locations) for determining starting rights for each event will be finalised by SAXC prior to the international season. In principle 50% of starts can be pre-selected, based on set performance standards. The remaining starts will be determined by performances in set selection races. If only one start is available then no athletes will be pre-selected.

World Championships
These selection standards for World Championship competition are set by SAXC. The World Championship Qualification Standards for 2009 are:

  • Athletes who acheive this standard will be eligible to start in all events except for the 10/15km Classic Interval start event, subject to starting rights.
  • In addition, athletes who achieve under 140 FIS Points will be considered for selection to start in specific events, subject to the size of the team and the availability of starting positions.
  • Athletes with FIS Point averages of 90 points (men) and 120 points (women) will be able to get a direct start in the 10km/15km Classic. Other athletes will need to ski in the FIS 5km/10km qualification race.
  • Each nation has a quota of 4 skiers per event, except for the Sprint Relay in which each each nation has a quota of 2 skiers.
  • The procedure (including relevant dates and locations) for determining starting rights for each event will be finalised by SAXC prior to the international season. In principle 50% of starts can be pre-selected, based on set performance standards. The remaining starts will be determined by performances in set selection races.

Winter Universiade (World University Championships)
Selection to the Winter Universiade Team is made by the Australian University Sports Federation. For the 2007 Winter Universiade the following qualification standards were used:

  • Selection criteria for the 2009 Winter Universiade will be available at: www.unisport.com.au/
  • Skiing Australia Cross Country will make recommendations to the AUSF to ensure that skiers of an appropriate level are representing Australian cross country skiing.

World Junior / U23 Championship
Selection to the World Junior / U23 Championship events is made by SAXC. For the 2009 World Junior / U23 Championship the following qualification standards are to be used:

  • Athletes who acheive this standard will be eligible to start in all events, subject to starting rights.
  • In addition, athletes who achieve results within 15 points of these set standards maybe considered for selection to start in specific events, subject to the size of the team and the availability of starting positions.
  • Additional Selection Races may be set by the National XC Selection Panel,and athletes will be notified of these races prior to the international season.
  • Starting positions will be determined by the National XC Selection Panel. Factors taken into consideration will include lowest FIS points, recent form, race distance and style.

Worldloppet

Any Australian may start in any Worldloppet event.

Australian Team members may be eligible for a seeded start in Worldloppet events. To receive a seeded start, skiers should contact the organisers of Australia's Worldloppet event, the Kangaroo Hoppet.
