Membership & Race Licences Information for 2008!

Ski & Snowboard Australia have a new membership and race licence system this year. For cross country skiing there are some major changes, particularly for juniors and masters athletes who do not require FIS licences. The information below will hopefully explain what each category of cross country ski racers needs to do.

Competitor Membership

All people who wish to compete in the National Championship or NSW/ACT Championship at open or junior level will need some form of SSA Registration. Clicking on this SSA link will take you to the main registration page. On the left hand side you should then click on the "Cross Country" link. This will take you through to the different cross country competitor options. There are three main options here - International, National, and Sport class registration. Details of these are covered below.

NB - The only exception here is for people who wish to have full SSA individual membership and voting rights and also compete as the Sport class racer. These people should register first as a Non-Competitor and then upgrade to the Sport Cross Country Racer registration at no cost.

International Cross Country Racer
This is for all athletes who wish to be eligible for FIS Points and FIS Ranking. It includes a FIS Licence, full Individual Membership of SSA, and everything else including under the National Cross Country Racer category below. A FIS licence is necessary to compete in any FIS international competition, except for FIS popular races. A FIS Licence is not needed for Worldloppet events.

National Cross Country Racer
This is for all athletes who wish to be eligible for National Ranking and National Team in the senior class. It includes full Individual Membership of SSA, which also provides SSA voting rights.

Sport Cross Country Racer
This is the main new category of registration. This is for all athletes who wish to race in National Championship or NSW/ACT Championship events but are not interested in National Rankings or in qualifying for the National Team. Sport class athletes are however eligible for Australian Junior Rankings and the Australian Junior Team (if they are U20), and are also eligible to win their age class at these championship events. This registration includes Associate Membership of SSA, which doesn't include SSA voting rights.

What should I do if I'm a Junior athlete?
If you are not interested in senior level National Team or Ranking, and you are not concerned with SSA voting rights, then you should register as a Sport Cross Country Racer. Junior athletes wishing to be eligible for senior National Ranking and senior National Team selection will require National Cross Country Racer registration. Junior athletes requiring FIS registration will need to purchase International Cross Country Racer registration.

What should I do if I'm a Masters athlete?
If you are not interested in a senior level National Team or Ranking, AND you are not concerned with SSA voting rights then you should register as a Sport Cross Country Racer. You can compete in the same championship events as the National Cross Country Racer and will be eligible to win and be placed in the age classes at these events. You are not eligible to be Australian champion and will not be listed in the open championship results.

Still confused?
It is a little different than before so that's okay. For for information feel free to call Ryan Taylor at SSA on (03) 9696 2344, or National Team Coach Finn Marsland on 0408 147940.

Non-Competition SSA Membership

If you wish to become a member of SSA but are not interested in racing there are two classifications of Membership - Individual and Associate. Individual Membership includes SSA voting rights. Associate Membership does not. That's basically the difference. The cost of Associate membership is the same as for Sport Cross Country Racer.

If you have registered as a either a Full or Associate SSA Non-Competitor member and decide that you want to compete in a National Championship event, you can upgrade to the Sport Cross Country Racer for no cost on the cross country competitor page.
