Race Report

Kosciusko Tour 2001 seeks shelter at Perisher

Crackenback and Charlotte Pass had 100 kph NW winds on Friday and Saturday. CXCSC intended to test the SW winds forecast at Crackenback on Sunday 9 September, but, at 7:00 pm Saturday night, reorganised the Tour to Perisher. NPWS, with more gale warnings, withdrew support for the traditional backcountry course. The groomer also advised failure to get past Snowy Bridge to Thredbo.

Skiers in the 2001 Kosciusko Tour avoided the gales at Crackenback for the shelter and fine weather of the Perisher trails. The groomed tracks softened quickly. 99 skiers, starting at the Perisher Nordic Shelter, headed out along the 10 km trail to return on the 7.5 and 2.5 km trails, some 8 km in all. 77 skiers then swept through the drink station to complete a second lap, finishing back near the start.

The first skier across the line was Chris Darlington in 1:00:23. Camille Melvey, the first woman home, was close behind in 1:10:25. Mark Abernethy (in 1:06:05) and Caitlin McCluskey (in 1:17:07) were the fastest CXCSC members.

The Family Trophy was won in an average 1:49:08 by three generations of the Bell-McCullough family (Andrew McCullough, David Bell and Patrick Bell).

The RAAF team (Hans Foehn Steve Both, Peter Brennan) won the Interservice Trophy in an average 1:32:24 from Army and Navy.

Fastest Club Team, Boonoona (Chris Darlington, Nic Almoukov, Camille Melvey), averaged 1:04:42.

Robin's Hoods (Margaret McCawley, Kathy Saw and Robin Gibson) overcame strong team fancy dress opposition from Shooting Stars and Jurassic Park. The Angel (Carol Green) won best individual fancy dress.

The friendly atmosphere of the Tour continued through to the Presentation at Blue Cow's "Top Spot" after the race, which provided an opportunity for skiers to catch up with old friends.

Here the party kicked off with finger food and a parade of the fancy dress contingent. We then got down to the serious business of drawing bib numbers for winners of the thousands of dollars worth of spot prizes listed over the page.

Many thanks for your participation as a tourer or a marshall. All tourers and marshalls received a badge and many received trophies, spot prizes or both. I would like recipients of a prize to show their appreciation by writing to the sponsor.

Tourers who paid more than $45 will be credited with the difference next year, as CXCSC will seek refunds for some unused transport and services.
