Course

In the two weeks leading up to the event, the weather was terrible recurring with blizzard conditions, but we had heaps of snow. The course preparation time was limited, which only allowed the 21km Fitzgeralds Hut / Edmondsons Hut loop to be groomed. The race was postponed to the Sunday to allow time to prepare the course and set up the start/finish area on the Saturday. The Kangaroo Hoppet skiers skied the loop twice, the Birkebeiners once. The Joey course went to Sun Valley. The start area above the Nordic Bowl was used for the first time.

Weather & Snow Conditions

After a miserable two weeks, the race day dawned still, clear and sunny. The snow was cold, dry and plentiful.

Night Sprints were conducted in the Alpine Bowl above the Gully Chairlift. The event comprised teams of two skiers, each skiing two legs of 400m. It was an elimination event for both men and women. A Hoppet Street Parade was held in Mt Beauty and included the lighting of the Hoppet flame on the SEC lawn. The torch was relayed by runners to the Falls Creek ski resort to light the flame there as part of the Night Sprints. It was skied the last 800m from the BHP Road to the Alpine Bowl by a team of promising local juniors. The street parade and flame relay run were conducted as part of a Hoppet Week festival. International teams represented USA and Korea.
